Zebra Longwing (Heliconius Charithonia)

Appearance:

  • Long black wings
  • Distinctive thin yellow bands
  • Slow and graceful flight

Habitat:

  • Hardwood hammocks
  • Thickets
  • Gardens
  • More common in south Florida, especially in the Everglades

Quick facts:

  • In 1996, it was designated as the state’s official butterfly
  • Makes a creaking noise when alarmed or disturbed
  • Feeds on nectar and pollen
  • Only butterflies to eat pollen which makes them more distasteful to predators
  • Lives up to 3 months
  • Lays eggs on passion vine leaves so the caterpillars are unappetizing to predators
  • Caterpillars are white with black spots and black spikes along the body
  • Zebra Longwings will roost communally with up to 60 adults for safety
