Zebra Longwing (Heliconius Charithonia)
Appearance:
- Long black wings
- Distinctive thin yellow bands
- Slow and graceful flight
Habitat:
- Hardwood hammocks
- Thickets
- Gardens
- More common in south Florida, especially in the Everglades
Quick facts:
- In 1996, it was designated as the state’s official butterfly
- Makes a creaking noise when alarmed or disturbed
- Feeds on nectar and pollen
- Only butterflies to eat pollen which makes them more distasteful to predators
- Lives up to 3 months
- Lays eggs on passion vine leaves so the caterpillars are unappetizing to predators
- Caterpillars are white with black spots and black spikes along the body
- Zebra Longwings will roost communally with up to 60 adults for safety
